The piece stems from a conjunction of ideas originating in the 18th century, ideas relating to early economic and ethnological assumptions about socio/cultural evolution. Adam Smith held the view that division of labor would lead the colonies - "step by step" - to the realm of civilization. The videos, accordingly, applies to artistic labor, based on a video documentation of the making of simple sculptures - double casts of my own face. My figure is reproduced on a small assembly line, constantly at work. Each of these clips repeats in an endless loop, and each depicts a stage of production through a bodily gesture. These videos are screened side by side in a continual loop.
